NameGender for Zapier
Three actions for any Zap: Find Gender for a name, email address or username, Get Salutation for a ready greeting in ten languages, and Check Name to flag junk entries such as “asdf qwerty”. Add the app with the invitation link above, connect your API key once, and use the actions after any trigger.
100 free credits every day. No card.
Connect the app
Open the invitation link and accept it with the Zapier account you build Zaps in. NameGender then appears in the app list of the Zap editor. The first time you add one of its actions, Zapier asks for your API key: create one in the NameGender dashboard and paste it in. The connection is tested with a call that costs no credit.
The app is listed by invitation while it collects the active users that Zapier’s public directory requires. Everything described here works the same way in the meantime.
The three actions
Find Gender takes a value and its type: a name, an email address or a username. It returns gender, probability, sample size, source, the parsed first and last name and the name type, so a later step can tell a person from a company or a shared mailbox such as info@. Add a two-letter country code when you have one; Andrea is male in Italy and female in Germany.
Get Salutation takes a name, or an email address when that is all you have, and returns a formal, an informal and a neutral greeting, such as “Sehr geehrte Frau Müller,” or “Sayın Ahmet Bey,”, in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Turkish, Polish or Japanese. When the gender is not certain, the formal line is neutral and the output says why.
Check Name returns plausible, suspicious or implausible with the reasons, and also as plain text in Signal codes, so a Filter step can stop a Zap when the codes contain profanity or placeholder. It never calls a name fake; use it to flag records, not to delete them.
Unknown names, filters and credits
An empty gender is a successful answer, not an error: the name was not found, or the input was a company or a role address. Put a Filter or Paths step after Find Gender so those records take a different route instead of writing an empty value over existing data.
Every action call costs one NameGender credit and one Zapier task, unknown results included. Trigger on new records rather than on updated ones, or a Zap that writes the result back to the same record can trigger itself again. A Zap with three or more steps needs a paid Zapier plan; two-step Zaps run on the free plan.
For tens of thousands of existing records, a spreadsheet file job is cheaper and faster than a Zap: export the list, upload it in the dashboard and import the result. Let the Zap handle only new records after that.
Questions
Is NameGender in Zapier’s public app directory?
Not yet. It is available through the invitation link while it reaches the number of active users Zapier requires for a public listing.
Does an unknown name cost a credit?
Yes. Every lookup costs one credit, including unknown names and role addresses.
Can I use the free Zapier plan?
For two-step Zaps, yes. A trigger, a NameGender action and a write-back step make three steps, which needs a paid plan.
Which action should a sign-up form use?
Check Name to flag junk entries and Get Salutation for the welcome email; Find Gender when you only need the gender column.
